Windows vs. Android for a Rugged RFID Tablet

Let the application and support requirements guide the operating system.

Windows and Android rugged tablets can both be candidates for an RFID workflow, but an operating system label does not establish a working reader integration. Start with the application people must use, then verify its supported reader interface, offline requirements and management policy on the exact proposed device.

Use our rugged tablet with RFID selection page for the complete hardware discussion. This guide answers the platform question. It does not declare one operating system faster, more secure or better for every RFID project.

Start with the application you need to run

If your team already has a desktop application, determine whether it can run and be supported on the proposed Windows tablet. Include its required peripherals, reader integration and operator screens. Keeping an existing application may reduce the scope of change, but a desktop interface still needs to be usable while carrying a tablet.

If the workflow uses an Android application, confirm its supported OS versions, distribution method and device requirements. Do not assume that an application developed for one handheld reader also supports a tablet and an external RFID reader. Ask for the actual application build and supported hardware list.

For a browser application, examine the path by which the reader supplies data. A web interface that works on both platforms may still depend on a local service, supported browser feature or reader utility. Treat that component as part of the system and support scope.

Keep the Getac models and generations explicit

Theia’s selection includes Getac UX10 and F110 Windows tablets, plus Getac ZX10 and ZX80 Android tablets. Manufacturer references include Getac UX10 specifications, Getac ZX10 specifications and Getac ZX80 specifications. Check the quoted generation and OS version rather than treating the current manufacturer page as the specification for every unit already owned.

A product photo identifies the pictured model or generation only. It is not evidence that a particular reader is attached, that software has been installed, or that the combination has passed a pilot. Keep those items separate in the proposal.

Ask the same integration questions on both platforms

Platform checks for the proposed RFID application
RequirementEvidence to request
Reader communicationSupported interface, driver or SDK and version
Application operationComplete task on the proposed tablet and reader
Offline workApproved local-storage and later-sync behavior
Device managementEnrollment, app deployment and update policy
Service ownershipResponsibility for host, reader, application and integration

Require a clear answer where an integration has not yet been built. Distinguish an existing supported application from proposed development work. A quote can include either, but they have different deliverables and acceptance requirements.

Define offline behavior as a requirement

Write down what “offline” means for the worker. Can the task begin without a connection, or only continue after an expected list has been downloaded? Which item details remain visible? What is the worker allowed to confirm locally, and what must wait for the system of record?

Specify how pending records are displayed, retained and reconciled after the connection returns. Include a conflict example, such as an asset that another operator changed during the outage. This is an application design decision; selecting Windows or Android alone does not supply safe synchronization.

Use a controlled interruption to test the proposed behavior. Preserve a known pending task, restore the connection and inspect the destination record. Our RFID integration guide for ERP and WMS explains the wider event-to-transaction boundary.

Consider how the fleet will be managed

Bring IT into the selection before hardware is ordered. Confirm enrollment, user access, application deployment, update ownership and the process for replacing a lost or failed device. Request the manufacturer’s support policy for the quoted generation and agree how reader firmware and application updates are tested together.

Review shared-device use as an actual workflow: one worker signs out, another starts a task, and the correct permissions and reader association must be clear. Do not place sensitive customer or business data in a pilot merely to demonstrate that screens work.

Test the interface where the task takes place

A stock-count screen, an issue-and-return screen and a maintenance inspection have different information needs. Try the application with the intended carrying arrangement, gloves where relevant, and representative lighting. Check whether the worker can read the item status, handle an exception and confirm the action while controlling the reader.

Use UX10 versus F110 or ZX10 versus ZX80 after choosing the application environment. Those comparisons address the host selection; this article addresses software fit and operating responsibility.

Prepare a platform brief for Theia

  • Current application and required task, including exceptions
  • Preferred OS and any existing tablet generations
  • Reader and tag specification, including the required RFID band
  • Supported interface or integration work to be scoped
  • Offline expectations and the destination business system
  • Management policy, update ownership and acceptance criteria

Theia offers RFID software and integration alongside hardware selection. Use the brief to identify what can be demonstrated now and what requires project-specific implementation.
